Hurricane Florence, Now a Category 4 Storm, on Track to Hit East Coast

The National Hurricane Center expects Florence's rainfall totals to be around 40 to 60 centimeters, with some areas receiving as much as 90 centimeters of rain. So as you can see, they're forecasting a major landfalling storm - Category 3 or 4 storm at landfall. He emphasized these numbers are conservative estimates; totals could be higher depending on the track of the storm and if it stalls.

The hurricane is expected to make landfall somewhere in the Carolinas early Friday.

Tropical-storm force winds extend outward up to 105 miles from the center, the NHC said on Wednesday.

Schools have already been closed, mandatory evacuations have been ordered, and a state of emergency declared in New Hanover and neighboring counties. Regardless of where Florence comes near land, its impact, including wind, rain, and storm surge, will be felt well outside the immediate area near storm's center. Tropical storm watches and warnings have been issued for the islands.
