A new book describes President Trump as “an emotionally overwrought mercurial and unpredictable leader”

Be careful when praising Bob Woodward.

As the White House scrambles to respond to the new book, Fear, by reporter Bob Woodward detailing the inner workings of President Donald Trump's chaotic and incompetent administration, some of the president's aides and advisers have come out to challenge the veracity of the reporting.

Woodward says: 'The first is not knowing. We learn things, secret things, off the record. Counselor Kellyanne Conway hops on the phone to say that the request was turned down.

Rob Porter, the former White House staff secretary who is featured heavily in the book, in a statement Tuesday said he was "struck by the selective and often misleading portrait" the book offers of the president and the administration.

Cohn commented on the claims set forth in the book, saying "This book does not accurately portray my experience at the White House".

Case in point, one excerpt reveals the newly appointed National Economic Council director Gary Cohn's "I've had a huge mistake" moment in his first meeting with then president-elect Trump.

Bob Woodward on "Fear" in the Trump White House
This has not been treated seriously enough. "Some of the things Trump did and does jeopardize the real national security ". Several prominent figures in the book have denied quotes that Woodward attributes to them.

President TrumpDonald John TrumpOakland Raiders's Marshawn Lynch sits during national anthem, then scores touchdown Trump declares state of emergency in Carolinas ahead of Hurricane Florence Ex-NFL player tears into Nike: Kaepernick ad "like 9/11 and Pearl Harbor" MORE allegedly suggested to his chief economic adviser a year ago that the government should print more money to help eliminate federal debt, according to an excerpt from Bob Woodward's new book.

"This is the ninth, and I've never seen this kind of active effort - and to be able to report it authoritatively - while the president is still in office". Fulfilling this responsibility does not make someone part of a "resistance" or mean they are seeking to "thwart" the President's agenda.

When faced with such advice, Woodward said, "President Trump will say, 'Well, I've had those ideas for 30 years, and if you disagree with me, you're wrong'". He and the CBS late night host discussed what exactly shocked Woodward the most about the Trump White House.

President Trump's accomplishments are undeniable: significant tax relief to spur economic growth, rolling back burdensome regulations to unleash job creators, remaking the federal judiciary to uphold the Constitution, and much more. Woodward's book, has said the book is based on "hundreds of hours of interviews with firsthand sources, contemporaneous meeting notes, files, documents and personal diaries". His method isn't to quote some unnamed official calling some politicians bad names; it's to substantiate events at the highest levels of the US government by corralling as many witnesses as he can find, generally on deep background.

Cohn too took issue with Woodward's narrative. The author uses every trick in the book to demean and belittle.

"As anyone who has worked for Trump knows and I think that establishes this also", Woodward told Perino, "that it's very hard to control Trump".

The White House on Monday called Woodward's work "reckless" and did not rule out the possibility of a lawsuit.
