Hurricane Florence Could Bring Up To 30 Inches Of Rain To Carolinas

Hurricane Florence is expected to grow in intensity

That reduced the winds' destructive power from Category 4 to Category 2, but forecasters warned that the widening storm, and its likelihood of lingering along the coast day after day after day, raises the risk of surging ocean water and torrential rain.

Normally when we talk about the potential for hurricane damage, we talk about the impact of storm surges and high winds - both of which are, to be sure, incredibly unsafe in their own right.

Meanwhile, lane reversals on USA 501 ended at noon and reversals on I-26 end Thursday night, allowing state police and transportation workers to get to a safe location before the storm hits.

Forecasters said Florence's eye could come ashore early Friday around the North Carolina-South Carolina line.

Where exactly the zone of heaviest rain sets up as the storm meanders inland is more uncertain, but models suggest that it may concentrate in southern North Carolina and northern SC through the weekend.

The NHC notes that amount of rainfall would "produce catastrophic flash flooding and prolonged significant river flooding". The governors of North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Georgia declared emergencies to help speed up government aid efforts. "These enormous waves are produced by being trapped along with very strong winds moving in the same direction as the storm's motion". At that time, almost 1,500 members were without power "primarily along the Nuese River", according to Tideland EMC, which has 22,600 accounts in Hyde, Beaufort, Pamlico, Dare, Washington and Craven counties. Now, there are signs that Hurricane Florence could deliver a similar blow to the East Coast beginning on Thursday, making it even more important to evacuate before the storm arrives. "It can still bring a massive storm surge ashore".

The storm was heading for the coast of the two states but heavy rain was also expected in Virginia to the north and Georgia to the south.

Hurricane-force winds were blowing 130 km from its centre, and tropical-storm-force winds reached up to 315km from the eye. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 80 miles from the center, while tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 195 miles.

FEMA has warned that while downgraded, the storm will still generate life threatening storm surge and rainfall in North and SC. Areas from Cape Fear to Cape Lookout face a potential 9 to 13 feet of storm surge, the National Hurricane Center warns, on top of the normal tides. Hurricane Helene and Subtropical Storm Joyce were off in the Atlantic, posing no threat.

But the biggest danger could be life-threatening storm surges.

Maryland is not predicted to receive the brunt of the storm.

In August 2017, Harvey made landfall as a Category 4 and practically stalled over southern Texas, dropping record-breaking rain in many areas and causing widespread flooding.

About 10 million people live in areas that have been under either hurricane or tropical storm warnings and watches.

And if Florence weren't enough, other storms out there are threatening people. Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands face possible isolated amounts of 3 inches. I believe that was a Category 1 storm when it hit Charlotte.

A system in the central Gulf of Mexico was a little less certain.

Florence is the most risky of three tropical systems now in the Atlantic.
