Sen. Bennet on why he’ll vote no on Kavanaugh

Watters Calls Out Booker Over 'I Am Spartacus' Moment: 'I Think I Smell a Phony'

From the moment that the Senate Judiciary Committee chairman gaveled in the first session, the proceedings were tumultuous, disrupted first by Democratic senators objecting to the rules and then by protesters shouting "Sham president, sham vote" and other chants.

The committee held four tumultuous days of hearings last week on Kavanaugh's nomination. He argued he was "not sure that all legal scholars refer to Roe as the settled law of the land at the Supreme Court level since Court can always overrule its precedent, and three current Justices on the Court would do so".

"For all their talk about transparency, what they most feared was a chance for the American people to hear directly from Judge Kavanaugh", he said. In fact, at a town hall in Osceola, Grassley was bombarded with so many Kavanaugh questions that he started imploring the attendees to ask about something else.

Leahy said Kavanaugh testified that he never received any documents that appeared to be drafted or prepared by Democratic committee staff, but "he got 8 pages of material taken VERBATIM from my files, obviously written by Dem staff, LABELED 'not [for] distribution'". She said everything Kavanaugh has said or done undermines his claim that he would be a neutral and impartial arbiter.

It also says he committed perjury during hearings related to his confirmation to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. The full Senate is expected to confirm Kavanaugh the following week, so he can be seated on the high court when it begins its new term October 1.

Leaders from the Women's March were among a broad coalition of organizations, including abortion rights groups, labor unions and advocates for gun control, behind this week's activism.

Bennet said he's "discouraged" by Republicans' refusal to release documents from Kavanaugh's past, including from his time working as a top White House aide in the George W. Bush presidential administration.

TOTENBERG: And that was pretty much the answer that Kavanaugh gave to every question that sought to explore what he might think are the limits of executive power.

"In this country, no one, not even the president, is above the law".

"When a court order requires a president to do something or prohibits a president from doing something under the Constitution or laws of the United States, under our constitutional system, that is the final word", Kavanaugh said.

He joins a growing list of Democrats opposing Kavanaugh, including Sens.

In his opening statement, Kavanaugh stated, "My judicial philosophy is straightforward". Today's times are different, they are undoubtedly decisive, and the gap of division competes in size with the Grand Canyon. The documents he was allegedly willing to throw himself on his own sword over were released hours earlier and his office was made aware.

"We were surprised to learn about Senator Booker's histrionics this morning because we had already told him he could use the documents publicly", Burck said by email. Republican John Cornyn of Texas warned him that senators could be expelled for violating confidentially rules.

Sens. Joe Donnelly in IN or Claire McCaskill in Missouri may benefit from a court battle that energizes the Democratic base. But Trump's fellow Republicans maintain a narrow Senate majority and there are no signs of defections in their ranks, indicating Kavanaugh likely will be confirmed.
