Mark Knight’s Serena Williams cartoon gets full support of Herald Sun

Serena Williams had no complaint with US Open winner Naomi Osaka

A cartoon of Serena Williams that has been widely condemned as a racist depiction of the tennis great has been partially reprinted on the front page of the Melbourne-based newspaper that initially published it.

The Herald Sun has hit out at those who criticised Mark Knight's drawing, which shows Williams jumping over a broken racquet next to a baby's dummy.

Fellow cartoonists and Herald Sun editors, however, have come to the defense of Knight, slamming the backlash as evidence that the world has become too "PC" (politically correct).

He also Tweeted out the front page of the Herald Sun that reads, "If the self-appointed censors of Mark Knight get their way on his Serena Williams cartoon, our new politically correct life will be very tiresome indeed".

The same day world No.25 Barbora Strycova lambasted Williams' claims of sexism and offered her own suggestion for the tennis legend's display.

The Herald Sun reported on Tuesday that Knight had been mentioned on Twitter almost 74,000 times following the cartoon's publication.

Many people on social media were not happy with the Herald Sun standing firm over the cartoon.

The 2018 National Basketball Association rookie of the year tweeted: "To disrespect Serena Williams, a 23 time Grand Slam Champion, in this light is truly disappointing".

Leading the criticism, Rowling said it had reduced "one of the greatest sportswomen alive to racist and sexist tropes".

"A champion tennis player had a mega-tantrum on the world stage, and Mark's cartoon depicted that", he said.

She was then issued three code violations, which ultimately equaled $17,000 in fines.

Mark Knight, a cartoonist for The Herald Sun in Australia, said in an interview that his portrayal of Williams stomping on her racket as the chair umpire asked Naomi Osaka to let Williams win was an accurate representation of their final match.

She was docked $10,000 for verbally using the umpire, $4,000 for being coached during the game and $3,000 for breaking a racket. It had nothing to do with gender or with race.

Knight responded, "I'm upset that people are offended, but I'm not going to take the cartoon down", continuing, "I can't undraw the cartoon". "It's getting harder to be a cartoonist in this insane anxious world - in this fragile angry humourless environment where leniency and understanding are in unsafe decline, and where psychic infections spread chaotically on social media with bad consequences".

Most recently, Alexis Ohanian, the founder of Reddit who is also husband to Williams, added his two cents to the controversy, describing the cartoon as "blatantly racist and misogynistic".
