Volkswagen to end iconic modern Beetle in 2019

Classic Beetles have been used in racing competitions around the world

However, instead of just quietly stopping production altogether, the company released two new special editions as a special send-off for the iconic "bug".

Volkswagen plans to produce a special "Final Edition" celebration Beetle series in the car's sole factory in Mexico.

The Beetle was originally designed in the 1930s by legendary engineer Ferdinand Porsche - a name now synonymous with fast cars - at the behest of Adolf Hitler, who wanted to see a cheap and practical mass-produced vehicle made available to the German people. That is the year the vehicle was taken off the market in the USA, production continued in Mexico and Latin America. The first convertible Beetle was...

The Puebla plant will shift to building other Volkswagen models.

Fun Fact: Beetle has its own 1968 Disney movie of its own called the "Love Bug" in which the racing auto Herbie had a mind of its own.

The New Beetle was a hit during its early years, with sales of more than 80 000 in the United States in 1999, but recently the car's sales have suffered along with most other small cars. The vehicle became a phenomenon again in the 1990s when VW brought it back to America after a 20-year lapse.

Volkswagen will stop making its iconic Beetle after almost seven decades on the market, the German automaker announced Thursday.

This isn't the first time Volkswagen has ceased US produciton of the Beetle.

The company revamped it for the 2012 model year in an effort to make it appeal to men. The cars also get three color ambient lighting; SE versions get cloth and leatherette rhombus-pattern seats with SEL offering standard diamond-stitched leather. Sales have been slow in recent years, as buyers opt for the more conventional Golf over the less practical Beetle.

Volkswagen plans to offer the two final edition models in both coupe and convertible styles before production is stopped. The Beetle comes with lots of features like a touch-screen infotainment system, leather seats, cruise control, automatic headlamps and more.

Chief Executive Officer of Volkswagen Group of America, Hinrich Woebcken, didn't rule out restarting Beetle production in the future.
