Apple's delayed AirPower charging mat may have just been killed off

Apple AirPower's complexity is causing delays, device might get scrapped completely

Apple's September 12 event revealed most of what we expected to see, but one product that didn't show up during the presentation was Apple's wireless charging pad, called AirPower.

But now it seems the all-white accessory may have been killed off completely. Or we may see something new from Apple during its event in October where we will most likely see the arrival of the new MacBook Pro and iPad Pro.

The report comes from renowned Apple leaker Sonny Dickson, who cites "multiple internal sources". In June of this year, sources claimed the AirPower had overheating issues, but Apple expected to launch it in time for the new iPhones.

The report further states, "Aside from heat and interference shielding, the complexity of the circuitry in the device is also posing a significant challenge, which likely can not be overcome unless the device is redesigned to be slightly thicker and larger - decisions which Apple is specifically unwilling to make compromises on for their overall design". The year is nearly coming to an end, with Apple's iPhone event for this year also done and dusted with.

The portable iPhone charger that also wirelessly charges the Apple Watch is only $34 today

Finally, he notes that the complexity of the device's circuitry also poses a big challenge. The report states that the problem is especially between "the communication of Apple Watch and AirPod charging data to the iPhone, which monitors the charge level of all devices placed on the mat".

Apple has promised that, unlike with other charging mats, consumers will be able to place their devices anywhere on the AirPower to get a charge, rather than having to center them perfectly. Another report says that the AirPower chip now has trouble communicating with the Apple products it's supposed to charge, preventing it from working the way it's supposed to. The multiple coil design is causing devices to overheat. The company has also removed all mentions of the AirPower from its website, lending more weight to the claim of its demise or a prolonged delay. The only survivor of this whole saga might end up being the AirPower name, which Dickson says may get repurposed in an entirely different device or feature in the future.

The oval-shaped mat is based on the Qi wireless charging standard, but the aforementioned Bloomberg report said the device would also include a custom chip and run a "stripped-down version" of iOS to better manage device pairing and power management between the three iDevices.
