Trump says Federal Bureau of Investigation should not probe allegations against top court pick

Trump feels 'terribly' for Kavanaugh; Dems want FBI probe

Christine Blasey Ford, the college professor who has accused U.S. President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault, is asking for an FBI investigation before a Senate hearing, multiple media outlets reported Tuesday.

Blasey, a research psychologist at Palo Alto University in northern California, has accused the judge of sexually assaulting her more than 30 years ago, at a high school party when both were teenagers.

"As a result of these kind of threats, her family was forced to relocate out of their home".

A day earlier, Republicans abruptly agreed to hold a public Judiciary Committee hearing at which Kavanaugh and Ford have been invited to testify.

The news, revealed in an interview with the Washington Post, came just four days before the Senate Judiciary Committee's plans for a preliminary vote on Kavanaugh's lifetime appointment to the nation's highest court.

Judge did not respond to repeated requests for comment from Business Insider.

"Because this never happened, I had no idea who was making this accusation until she identified herself yesterday", added Kavanaugh, who said he was willing to talk to the Judiciary Committee in any way it deemed appropriate "to refute this false allegation, from 36 years ago, and defend my integrity".

According to Ford, the alleged incident took place during the summer in the early 1980s. The president said he was "totally supporting" Kavanaugh and rejected calls for the FBI to investigate the accusation.

Amazon now 3rd-biggest digital ad seller in US
Google will take in $41 billion in digital ad revenue in the U.S.in 2018, eMarketer estimates, and Facebook $22.8 billion. The revised number reflects an accounting change by Amazon as well as increased demand, EMarketer said.

If the Judiciary committee's timetable slips further, it would become increasingly hard for Republicans to schedule a vote before the November 6 elections, in which congressional control will be at stake.

"I did not ask to be involved in this matter nor did anyone asked me to be involved", Judge said in a written statement forwarded to the committee by his attorney, Barbara Van Gelder.

Ford did not tell anyone about the incident at the time, but The Washington Post reviewed notes from a therapist she saw in 2012 detailing the incident. There could be evidence introduced to support or dispute Kavanaugh's denial, and his credibility could be adjusted accordingly - just as Ford's old actions could be used as corroborating evidence to bolster her claims.

Greg Rinckey, a lawyer specializing in employment law and the security clearance process, said Federal Bureau of Investigation background checks aren't meant to dig up decades-old claims that never resulted in a police report or criminal charges. It said the Federal Bureau of Investigation had forwarded to the White House a letter, evidently from Ford, describing alleged misconduct in the 1980s by Kavanaugh.

It is unclear if a full investigation would be concluded before the planned public hearing on Monday.

Democrats have objected to the proposed hearing format, with Feinstein arguing there should be more than just two witnesses, possibly to include people in whom Ford previously confided. Brett Kavanaugh was already disqualified to serve on the Supreme Court. She faced intense and probing questioning about her encounters with Thomas, who went on to be confirmed. Orrin G. Hatch (R-Utah) said Monday that Kavanaugh told him he wasn't. Senator Elizabeth Warren wrote alongside the clip she shared, while others users suggested the footage was relevant to the recent accusations. The point is this: Republican (and Democratic) senators should have as their first and only priority getting as close to the truth of the allegations made by Ford against Kavanaugh as possible.

Ford's challenge also evoked the 1991 battle over the Republican nomination of Clarence Thomas, now the court's most conservative justice. Quoting Justice Thomas from his nomination hearing, Mr. Feehery said this seems like another "high-tech lynching", this time "of a white Irish Catholic guy".

Republicans had hoped Trump's second Supreme Court nomination would galvanize conservative voters while placing incumbent Democrats in a tough position of having to back Kavanaugh to reassure Trump's base.
