Stunning new Porsche 935 'Moby Dick' racer revealed

New Porsche 935 debuts at Rennsport Reunion, based on 911 GT2 RS - Autoblog

But the advantage of a track-only auto is not having to abide by the tough standards and homologation rules that roads cars have meet, so it's fair to say Porsche's engineers had fewer pesky restrictions to meet with this vehicle. But, like its predecessor, this new track focussed race auto dropped its conventional body and replaced (or supplemented) it with carbon fibre composite parts. At the rear, the bodywork has been extended to give it the "Moby Dick" design together with the wide vented fenders.

The spectacular aerodynamics are a completely new development, and pay tribute to the Porsche 935/78 Le Mans race vehicle, which fans dubbed "Moby Dick" due to its elongated shape, massive fairings, and white base color. Measuring 1,909 millimetres in width by 400 millimetres in depth, the rear wing lends aerodynamic balance. While a works Porsche 935 didn't claim an outright Le Mans win, the Kremer team won the event in 1979, driving a customer 935 K3.

These references are carried through to the cockpit. The wood shift knob has been seen in the 917, the 909 Bergspyder, and the Carrera GT. There's a roll cage, a racing bucket with a six-point safety. If you want to bring a passenger along on your private-track shenanigans, a second seat is optional.

Other because racecar additions include a 115-litre FIA-compliant fuel cell, onboard air jacks, and a fire extinguisher system. In fact, the 3.8-liter, twin-turbo flat-six gas engine is almost exactly the same as the one in the 911 GT2 RS, which means it puts out about 700 hp.

The Porsche 935 is back as a GT2 RS-based motorsport monster

Hiding in that long tail is a 3.8L flat-six fitted with a pair of turbos. Stopping ability comes courtesy of six-piston aluminium racing calipers and 380mm steel discs at the front, and four-pot calipers with 365mm discs at the rear. Like on the road-going GT2 RS, the 935 uses electromechanical steering with variable ratio.

The stability control, traction control, and anti-lock braking systems can be adjust or switched off via a map switch. Porsche's new racer dominated FIA sports auto racing in the late-'70s. Deliveries kick off in June 2019.

The 935 was Porsche's answer to the Group 5 silhouette regulations belatedly introduced for the 1976 World Championship of Makes. Those rules allowed for "silhouette" cars, although there was a limited definition of what that meant, allowing manufacturers to run bespoke racers that looked like road cars. In honor of Porsche's 70th anniversary, only 77 will be built, each costing an eye-watering €701,948 (a nod to the year the first Porsche 356 was built).
