Saudi Arabia denies journalist killed at consulate in Turkey

Turkey believes journalist killed in Saudi consulate

Turkey said on Tuesday it will search the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul as part of an investigation into the disappearance of a missing Saudi contributor to The Washington Post, a week after he vanished during a visit there.

Bruce Riedel, a former C.I.A. analyst who advised four presidents and is now at the Brookings Institution, called Khashoggi's disappearance consistent with the pattern of "crude intimidation" and the growing silencing of dissent in Saudi Arabia.

The Post's image showed Jamal Khashoggi walking into the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul a week ago.

"Based on their initial findings, the police believe that the journalist was killed by a team especially sent to Istanbul and who left the same day", the official told AFP.

The state-run Saudi Press Agency early Sunday morning carried a statement from the Istanbul Consulate that "strongly denounced these baseless allegations", and expressed doubt that they came from Turkish officials that are informed of the investigation or are authorized to comment on the issue.

Saudi Arabia is a longtime ally of the United States, but on Monday senior US officials expressed alarm over Khashoggi's disappearance. 'I don't like hearing about it and hopefully that will sort itself out.

"If media reports from the weekend regarding Mr Khashoggi's case prove correct, that would be extremely concerning and the UK will treat the incident very seriously - friendships depend on shared values", a spokesperson for the UK Foreign Office said.

Still, Khashoggi's disappearance gives Democrats in particular an opportunity to shine the spotlight on Trump's good rapport with authoritarian leaders.

The Turkish ministry didn't say when the premises would be searched, prompting some experts to question the usefulness of the process. "I don't know who is behind these claims, or their intentions", he said, "nor do I care frankly".

In a letter sent Monday evening, the prince said it is "absolutely false, and baseless", to accuse the kingdom of killing or detaining Khashoggi, according to NBC news.

On a positive note, the terrible crime in Turkey should at least put Saudi Arabia under closer scrutiny.

Mr Khashoggi, 59, went missing while on a visit to the consulate in Istanbul for paperwork to marry his Turkish fiancée.

It's been alleged that a Saudi journalist who disappeared in Turkey last week was killed in the country's consulate - here's what you need to know.

Meanwhile, the head of the Turkish-Arab Media Association in Turkey, Turan Kislakci has told Shebab that Turkish officials had assured him of Khashoggi having been brutally murdered inside the consulate. "But if this deeply disturbing news report is confirmed, the United States & the civilized world must respond strongly, and I will review all options in Senate".

Khashoggi hadn't lived in Saudi Arabia since he moved to the United States a year ago.

"The Saudi authorities have notified that they are open to cooperation in this regard and that the examination can be conducted in their consular buildings in Istanbul", a Turkish foreign ministry spokesperson said Tuesday, without elaborating as to when the search would happen.

The Saudi writer spent previous year in the U.S.in self-imposed exile, after he fled the kingdom amid a crackdown on intellectuals and activists who criticized the policies of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Ben Saul, Professor of International Law at the University of Sydney, says that a host state can not interfere with consulate communications, and crates are deemed to be "diplomatic bags".
