UN Ambassador Haley resigning; she gives no reason

U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley Is Resigning

"She's done a fantastic job and we've done a fantastic job together", Trump said.

On Tuesday, as Haley spoke to reporters next to President Donald Trump at the White House, she ruled out running for president in 2020, pledging to campaign for Trump's re-election.

Haley's impending departure came as a shock to Washington, amid crucial times for foreign policy, and one month ahead of November's midterms.

U.S. President Donald Trump speaks as U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley looks on at the United Nations Global Call to Action on the World Drug Problem during the 73rd U.N. General Assembly in NY, U.S., September 24, 2018.

"By accepting gifts of luxury private flights, Ambassador Haley seems to be falling in line with other Trump administration officials who are reaping personal benefits from their public positions", CREW Executive Director Noah Bookbinder said in a Monday statement.

Trump praised Haley, saying she has done an "incredible job" and is "somebody who gets it".

Trump announced, "At the end of the year Nikki will be leaving".

In her brief White House press conference with President Trump, Haley said it was her "honor" to have defended America. "You have been very special to me", she told Ms. Haley who was sitting to his right.

At the UN, Haley helped spearhead the Trump administration's efforts to combat what it alleged to be anti-American and anti-Israel actions by the worldwide body.

According to Washington post, Trump said Haley first told him about six months ago that she would like to "take a little time off" at the end of this year.

"It was a blessing to go into the United Nations every day with body armor", Haley said, saying her job was to defend America on the world stage. "I just don't know who I'm fighting that day", Haley told Reuters earlier this year. She was re-elected in 2014.

"I proudly serve in this administration, and I enthusiastically support most of its decisions and the direction it is taking the country", Ms Haley wrote.

Former Office of Government Ethics Director Walter Shaub noted on Twitter Tuesday that Haley's resignation came after CREW filed its complaint. "So I look forward to supporting the president in the next election", she said.

Nikki Haley has been one of the most vocal and pro-active advocates for Israel in the United Nations the Jewish State has ever had.
