Where Is Hurricane Michael Right Now?

Hurricane Michael strengthens as thousands flee

The hurricane's winds and waves were so strong, their rumblings were detected on seismometers - equipment created to measure earthquakes.

And people living far away from the center of a hurricane aren't immune.

In Panama City Beach, a building that was still under construction didn't stand a chance against Michael.

Central pressure continues to fall and now sits at 947 millibars.

Early Wednesday, Hurricane Michael grew significantly overnight into a powerful and possible devastating Category 4 storm as it heads towards Florida's Panhandle. It is, simply, a history-changing storm.

Flight schedules remained grounded at airports in the Florida Panhandle as Hurricane Michael approached the region.

On its current track, the core of Michael is expected to move northeastward across the southeastern USA on Wednesday night and Thursday, and then move off the Mid-Atlantic coast away from the United States on Friday.

And due to climate change, storm surge has become an even greater threat in recent years. "Storm surge can occur before, during, or after the center of a storm passes through an area".

Michael was positioned 65 miles from Panama City, moving north at 13 mph.

In its discussion, the center said the environment ahead of Michael was conducive to intensification.

"If we are open quickly after the storm, that means the community is coming back and folks are out, we are getting back to that sense of normalcy", Waffle House spokesman Pat Warner told CNN in September. Tropical-storm force winds extending 185 miles (295 kilometers) from the center were already lashing the coast. The central pressure remains 965 millibars.

United Way of the Chattahoochee Valley also said that anyone seeking local resources connected to Hurricane Michael can dial 2-1-1 or 706-405-4775 around the clock. Michael was heading north-northeast at 14 miles per hour (22 kph) with maximum sustained winds of 155 miles per hour (250 kph), the hurricane center said.

He said some hurricanes can produce more than 100 tornadoes in the first two days after landfall.

The Gadsden County Sheriff's Office in Florida said Wednesday evening that one person was killed by a falling tree during the storm.

Authorities told residents along the affected areas of Florida's Gulf of Mexico coast that they had run out of time to evacuate and should hunker down.

About 3.7 million people are under hurricane warnings in Florida's Panhandle and Big Bend regions, along with parts of southeastern Alabama and southern Georgia.

A Storm Surge Warning is in effect for.

AccuWeather projects a storm surge of 10 to 15 feet in some areas of the western Florida coast, as well as waves that could reach 30 feet in height.

The hurricane struck South Miami-Dade County in Florida and caused an estimated $26 billion in damage. Storm surge warnings continue, from the Okaloosa County-Walton County line to the Anclote River.
