Fresh leaks in Khashoggi case Turkish press runs new pictures

Report: U.S. Knew of Saudi Plan to Capture WaPo Columnist, Failed to Stop It

"It's a very serious situation for us and this White House", Trump said. "We want to see what's going on".

Kaye said he did not have "any particular plan" about what the global investigation would look like, but that "multiple models" - such as a United Nations -mandated probe - exist. It's a very bad situation.

"We don't know what has happened to him".

Why it matters: The leaking of the images appears aimed at turning up pressure on Riyadh to reveal what happened to Khashoggi as the weeklong saga threatens to grow into a major diplomatic row between the two countries.

A bipartisan group of US senators is forcing the Trump administration to investigate the disappearance of a Saudi journalist, triggering a human rights probe that could result in sanctions against Saudi officials and entities.

"That sounds like it goes right to the top, Mr. President", he said.

"He's got a vision for the country that I think is extraordinary for a young leader", Corker said, while making it clear the Crown Prince could nonetheless be targeted personally by US sanctions if he was complicit in Khashoggi's disappearance.

The Khashoggi incident might make it very hard for the Trump administration to win congressional approval for arms sales to the Saudis.

Asked if he believed it was the Saudis, Trump responded: 'I would rather not say, but the answer is yes, ' he said.

In Washington, President Donald Trump expressed reservations over withholding American arm sales over the writer, even as prominent American lawmakers increasingly criticize Saudi Arabia - America's longtime security ally in the region. He also called for at least a temporary halt in USA military support for the Saudi bombing campaign against Iranian-backed rebels in Yemen.

Bob Corker, a Republican Senator who chairs the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, said on Thursday that "significant sanctions" would have to be imposed at the "highest levels" of the Saudi government if Khashoggi was the victim of a state-sponsored killing, AP reported.

Khashoggi's fiance Cengiz was surprised when an American friend told her of Trump's comment about inviting her to the White House, the friend told Reuters.

"I think that would be hurting us", Trump said.

At least 15 Saudi journalists and bloggers have been arrested over the past year, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) said on Wednesday, following the disappearance of Saudi columnist Jamal Khashoggi.

Saudi officials have denied Kashoggi was killed within the consulate and say he left shortly after arriving to retrieve a document related to his upcoming wedding.

Today, Turkish television broadcaster NTV released CCTV footage of some of the Saudis going from the airport to the Movenpick Hotel, where they are believed to have stayed, and on to the consulate.

The Saudi ambassador to Turkey was summoned to the ministry to request Riyadh's cooperation in the investigation, a Turkish official said.

Khashoggi went missing from the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul on October 2, 2018.

MSNBC "All In" host Chris Hayes took to Twitter with a freakish conspiracy on Wednesday, pondering if wealthy Saudi Arabians are shelling out cash to President Trump in exchange for the authorization to kill critics.

The Post, a newspaper to which Khashoggi contributed, cited unnamed U.S. officials as saying that Saudi officials had been heard discussing a plan to lure Khashoggi from the USA state of Virginia, where he resided, and detain him.

On Wednesday, State Department spokesman Robert Palladino said the United States "had no advance knowledge" of such a plan.

Khashoggi, a wealthy former government insider who had been living in the U.S.in self-imposed exile, had gone to the consulate in Istanbul on October 2 to get paperwork he needed for his upcoming marriage while his Turkish fiancee waited outside.

Spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the U.S.is continuing to monitor the unfolding investigation in Istanbul, but offered no information about what the crown prince told the US officials about Khashoggi's disappearance.

He left Saudi Arabia past year saying he feared retribution for his criticism of Riyadh over the Yemen war and its crackdown on dissent, and since then wrote columns for the Washington Post. "But I don't want to rush to judgment", Corker said on Tuesday.

The Saudi government maintains that they had nothing to do with Khashoggi's disappearance, and that the journalist left the consulate soon after he got there.
