China to replace streetlights with artificial moon by 2020

Queqiao, the relay satellite for the Chang'e-4 lunar mission entered the planned halo orbit around the second Lagrangian point of the Earth Moon system about 65,000 km from the Moon on 14 June 2018 at 03:06 UTC (11:0

Officials in China are planning to launch a man-made moon to rest in the sky above the south-western city of Chengdu.

This is due to the object's planned orbit about 500km above Earth-much closer than the 380,000-km distance to the moon, Wu said.

Other users invoked Hou Yi, from Chinese mythology, who shot down nine suns, to come and shoot down the extra moon.

According to local reports picked up by the Asia Times, the city has been evaluating the technology behind an artificial moon for years and has tested it enough to feel it's ready for launch.

The moon would be eighttimes brighter than the Earth's actual moon, creating an opportunity for the streets of Chengdu to be illuminated by the satellite instead of street lights.

The artificial moon will be able to light an area within a diameter of 10 to 80 kilometres.

A Chinese city's plans to launch a man-made moon to replace street lights has been met with derision and incredulity online.

The project is set to be completed in 2020 and, according to the People's Daily, the artificial moon is "designed to complement the moon at night". Citing the imagined French necklace of mirrors as the impetus for the project, Chunfeng explained that the technology behind the satellite has been in the testing phase for years but is finally near completion.

There are concerns that the light will affect animal behaviour. As Fortune's Don Reisinger notes, Chengdu officials hope the project will generate a financial windfall, allowing the city to cut electricity costs and attract tourists.

The freaky plan, which would give a "dust-like glow" for the south-western city of 14 million, was revealed in the People's Daily newspaper.

In the 1990s, Russian scientists reportedly used giant mirrors to reflect light from space in an experimental project called Znamya or Banner.

In 1999, a Russian experiment to deploy a large mirror in space created to function like an artificial moon was unsuccessful after it failed to unfold properly.
