Saudi team must have acted on orders in Khashoggi case, says Turkey

Khashoggi's body parts transported in suitcases Report

Staff at Saudi Arabia's consulate in the Turkish city of Istanbul tried to dismantle closed-circuit television cameras (CCTV) of the premises in an attempt to help cover up the gruesome murder of dissident Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi inside the diplomatic mission last month, a report says.

The official confirmed a report in Turkey's Sabah newspaper that an 11-member Saudi team sent to Turkey for a joint investigation included experts on chemicals and toxicology who were reportedly charged with obfuscating the evidence.

The newspaper alleges the team visited the building every day from 12 October until the 17 October, before leaving the country three days later. He was killed after entering the Saudi consulate on October 2 for paperwork to marry his Turkish fiance.

On Saturday, the paper said Khashoggi's body - which still hasn't been found - was dismembered and removed from the Saudi Consulate in five suitcases.

"All what we want right now is to bury him in Al-Baqi (cemetery) in Medina (Saudi Arabia) with the rest of his family", Salah Khashoggi said in an interview, filmed in Washington.

Initially, Saudi Arabia said Khashoggi walked out of the consulate and that his whereabouts were unknown, then that he died in a fist fight and still later that he had died in a chokehold.

Salah Khashoggi, 35, a dual US-Saudi citizen, and his brother, Abdullah, who lives in the United Arab Emirates, spoke with CNN in an interview that aired Sunday and described the past few weeks of uncertainty.

He asked Saudi officials to explain who in Riyadh sent the 15-man team suspected of involvement in the killing.

Timely leaks to the press from Turkish government sources, along with more official statements, have forced the Saudis to repeatedly backtrack and tacitly admit their role in Khashoggi's grisly death.

Bandar bin Mohammed Al-Aiban, the Saudi delegation chief and president of Saudia Arabia's Human Rights Commission, responded, "The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has already expressed its regret and pain for the death of Jamal Khashoggi".

Meanwhile, two of Mr Khashoggi's sons appealed for his remains to be returned so that he may be buried in Saudi Arabia. "It's easier to stick a label on him", Abdullah said in response to these claims.

More than 40 member states, including the US, called on Saudi Arabia to carry out a thorough and transparent investigation, with many also calling for reform to the Kingdom's freedom of expression laws. The group paid over $100 billion in settlements for what Saudi authorities said were corruption charges.

Saudi Arabia bears responsibility to find out what happened to the body of Jamal Khashoggi, Turkey's foreign minister said, reiterating Ankara's stance that it was not King Salman who ordered the killing.

"All persons involved in that crime will be prosecuted", he said, stressing that "the investigation is continuing in line with our domestic laws".

We made it very public.
