'El Chapo' Trial: Trial of alleged drug kingpin to begin in US

The mythical criminal pedigree of Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, who was extradited in 2017 to face US drug conspiracy charges, has sparked security concerns at his upcoming New York City trial that at times have drawn as much attention as the case's sensational allegations.

His beauty queen wife, Emma Coronel Aispuro, was barred from the selection process as are all members of the public to protect jurors from any threat. Both were dismissed. One said she "read (Guzman's) family will come after jurors and their families" and the other said she was concerned about safety "in general".

As a reason for such precautions, Brooklyn federal judge Brian Cogan has echoed prosecutors" points that the Sinaloa Cartel is known to "[employ] "sicarios, ' " or hit men, who have carried out hundreds of acts of violence against rivals.

Opening arguments are scheduled to start on November 13, after a week of jury selection, held behind closed doors under security reserved for the most risky defendants.

Jury selection is to continue on Tuesday.

Opening statements are tentatively scheduled for November 13.

At pretrial hearings leading to the trial, heavily armed federal officers and bomb-sniffing dogs patrolled outside.

Guzman has been held in solitary confinement since Mexico extradited him in January 2017, one day before Donald Trump took office.

USA prosecutors contend that from 1989 to 2014, the cartel smuggled at least 340,892 pounds (154,626 kg) of cocaine into the United States, as well as heroin, methamphetamine and marijuana, raking in $14 billion.

Dems Will Return US to 'Economic Abyss'
A CNN poll released on November 5 found that Democrats led Republicans on a generic ballot by 13 points, 55 percent to 42 percent. Polling suggests the Republican coalition is increasingly older, whiter, more male and less likely to have a college degree.

Guzman is charged with 17 counts of murder, conspiracy, drug trafficking and money laundering.

Guzman's lawyers say the allegations are based on the false testimony of killers and drug dealers.

El Chapo made world headlines in July 2015 when he slipped out of his cell at the maximum security Altiplano federal prison via a mile-long underground tunnel.

That tipped off investigators to his location.

He was captured in Guatemala in 1993 and extradited to Mexico. After a 2001 escape, he kept the machine moving while on the run, hiding for 13 years in plain sight. He was recaptured in Mexico in February 2014.

The Sinaloa cartel that Guzman founded in 1989 is still hugely powerful. "Probably not. The machine keeps rolling", says Rob Heroy, a North Carolina lawyer who has defended other Mexican drug barons.

In his way now is a lineup of government witnesses who survived the wave of violence and are expected to give details about the ruthless way he kept power for 20 years in the cutthroat world of worldwide drug trafficking.

It is alleged that he spent a quarter of a century smuggling more than 155 tonnes of cocaine into the United States.

Bacon reported from Virginia.
