Jeff Sessions: US Attorney General SACKED by Donald Trump

Jeff Sessions resigns as attorney general at Trump's request

Sessions' resignation letter clearly states the departure was demanded by the president.

Sessions' resignation is not all that surprising.

Trump announced in a tweet that Sessions' chief of staff, Matthew Whitaker, will become the new acting attorney general.

Trump said a new replacement will be nominated at a later date.

It is an abrupt end to a hard tenure for Jeff Sessions, who was the first Republican senator to back Donald Trump in his quest for the presidency.

Sessions, a Republican and former Alabama senator, has been the focus of public attacks by Trump, who criticized him for recusing himself from the Russian Federation investigation because of his role on the Trump campaign team before becoming attorney general.

Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Wednesday that "it would create a constitutional crisis if this were a prelude to ending or greatly limiting the Mueller investigation".

Schumer, of NY, expressed concern over the choice of former southern Iowa federal prosecutor Matt Whitaker as Sessions replacement. Now, his chief of staff, Matthew Whitaker, 49, will fill in as Acting Attorney General.

If Sessions can't address this issue immediately, then we have one final question needing an answer: "When is it time for a new attorney general?" wrote Rep. Mark Meadows and Rep. Jim Jordan in the Washington Examiner.

Mr Rosenstein in turn appointed Mr Mueller, a former Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Earlier on Wednesday, Mr Trump denied he would shut down Mr Mueller's team, but still labelled the investigation an illegal "witch hunt" that had spent "millions" of dollars.

"Given his previous comments advocating defunding and imposing limitations on the Mueller investigation, Mr. Whitaker should recuse himself from its oversight for the duration of his time as acting attorney general", Schumer said. He will serve our Country well ... "But when everybody sees what's going on in the Justice Department - I always put "justice" now with quotes". Rosenstein, who many suspected Trump would fire following reports that he wanted to invoke the 25th Amendment against the president, has a previously scheduled meeting at the White House set for Thursday.

The president fired his head of legal affairs after he recused himself from the Russian Federation investigation over the 2016 presidential race.
