Man admits to killing his pregnant wife and two daughters

Colorado man pleads guilty to killing pregnant wife daughters as part of plea deal

Colorado father Christopher Watts pleaded guilty to murdering his pregnant wife and their two children on Tuesday after striking a deal with prosecutors which means he will not face the death penalty.

With the agreement of the victims' family, the district attorney eliminated the death penalty from consideration in exchange for Watts' guilty plea to all nine counts.

He could be heard sniffing and trembled each time he said "guilty" in response to each charge read against him by the judge.

Shannan was 15 weeks pregnant at the time of her death.

Shanann Watts' parents, Sandra and Frank Rzucek, as well as her brother, Frank Rzucek Jr., also attended the hearing and subsequent press conference.

Watts said in court he is satisfied with his defense representation and is knowingly accepting this plead deal.

Shanann Watts, Bella and Celeste were first reported missing on August 13 by one of Shanann Watts' friends. The two girls were submerged in oil tanks, and Shanann Watts was in a shallow grave nearby. The bodies were found the week Watts was arrested. Investigators later learned Watts had been involved in an affair with a coworker, the affidavit states.

His wife, Shanann Watts, 34, was reported missing back in August, along with the couple's two daughters, Bella, 4, and Celeste, 3. But he said he strangled her in "a rage" when he discovered she had strangled their two daughters after he sought a separation.

Watts initially spoke to the media after his wife and children were reported missing in August.

"I was not willing to entertain any further concessions above and beyond removing the death penalty", he said.

"He deserves a life sentence for each and every act", Weld County District Attorney Michael Rourke said.

'I don't know how I could have sat in Sandy's kitchen and asked her to commit the next 25 years of her life to the criminal justice system without any assurance that the sentence would ever actually be imposed, ' he said.

After visiting Shanann Watts' family in North Carolina and speaking with other prosecutors in Colorado, Rourke said he made the decision not to pursue the death penalty.

As part of the deal, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for the first four counts - murder.

'No one wins today. "I never wanted to stand up and have a press conference like this".

Rourke called those claims a "flat out lie" and said he did not believe Christopher Watts would give authorities a full, accurate and truthful statement. "The spotlight shines directly where it belongs, on him".
