Ginsburg was admitted to George Washington University Hospital on Thursday morning, according to a Supreme Court press release. She went home for the night because she didn't think it was that serious, NBC News explains.

Ginsburg broke two ribs in 2012 after suffering a fall, an incident she did not disclose to the public until months later.

Ginsburg was planning to be in court today for the formal welcome ceremony for newest Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

Appointed by President Bill Clinton in 1993, Ginsburg is the second of four women to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court.

There's precedent for her lengthy service, as Justices Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. and John Paul Stevens were both 90 when they retired.
