Imelda Marcos faces arrest for graft

The former first lady of the Philippines, Imelda Marcos, has been sentenced by a Manila court to decades in prison for corruption, 32 years after she and her husband, Ferdinand Marcos, were forced from power in a popular uprising.

The Office of the Ombudsman filed the 10 graft cases in 1991, while the court acquitted her in three counts of graft.

"We will wait for the order of the court".

The guilty verdict against Imelda is the first to hold her criminally liable for hiding stolen wealth in Switzerland using shell foundations.

She was sentenced in absentia to six to 11 years in prison on each count.

The court said Imelda had "financial interest" in the seven Swiss foundations they created pegged to amount to 200 million dollars. Marcos, who is running for Ilocos Norte governor, is also perpetually disqualified from holding public office.

Rosales said the decision was a huge setback to efforts by the Marcos family to revise history by denying numerous atrocities under the dictatorship, and urged Filipinos to fight all threats against democracy and civil liberties. She should be arrested and photos of her being brought to justice made public.

Marcos said in a statement that the decision was being studied by one of her lawyers who notified the Marcos family that he intends to appeal the decision.

President Rodrigo Duterte, an ally of the Marcoses, said past year the Marcos family had indicated a willingness to return a still-unspecified amount of money and "a few gold bars" to help ease budget deficits.

But Carranza, who now works for the International Centre for Transitional Justice in NY, said that "even under authoritarian rulers - a Marcos, Duterte, (Donald) Trump or (Jair) Bolsonaro - there can be independent, self-respecting judges". Anti-Marcos activists and human rights victims welcomed the conviction as long overdue.

The family's notoriety stems back to Ferdinand Marcos declaring martial law in 1972. He died in self-exile in Hawaii in 1989 but his widow and children returned to the Philippines.

President Duterte enjoys close ties with the Marcos family and has called the late strongman his role model.

Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo said the Palace respects the decision of the Sandiganbayan on the case of Marcos and recognizes that such ruling should remind government officials to serve people with integrity. "And consistent with that, any violator of the law will be prosecuted fully until the end". We will not interfere with the judiciary.

Panelo was Imelda's lawyer in a previous corruption case and ran for senator under her political banner.
