Israeli air strikes kill at least seven in Gaza

Netanyahu Approves Qatari Salary Deal as 'Right Step' to Avoid Gaza Collapse

In Israel, the military said it had intercepted two rockets fired from Gaza. In the wake of the incident and the Israeli Air Force (IAF) strike that followed, the Palestinians launched 17 rocket at Israel and several Red Code rocket-alert sirens were sounded throughout the night.

Even his erstwhile allies attacked him for indirectly doing business with a militant group that has fought three wars against Israel and is sworn to Israel's destruction.

Hamas has been leading the protests since March 30 in a bid to ease a crippling Israeli-Egyptian blockade that was imposed in 2007 in order to weaken the militant group. It also comes just hours after Netanyahu said in Paris, where he was participating in events marking the end of World War One, that he wanted to give a further chance to the first stage of an arrangement with Hamas.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cut short a visit to Paris and was returning to Israel after the violence erupted, a spokesman said.

A picture taken on 27 October 2018 shows a fireball exploding during Israeli air strikes in Gaza City.

The Israeli army spokesman Avichay Adraee said "at least 10 rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip into Israel".

One Israeli soldier was killed and another slightly injured an exchange of fire during the operation, said the army.

Hamas said that an Israeli commando unit entered three kilometers (2 miles) into the strip near Khan Yunis in a civilian vehicle and shot dead Nour Baraka, the deputy commander of Hamas' military wing, the Qassam Brigade. During the ensuing firefight, another IDF officer was wounded and at least seven Hamas gunmen were killed, including a senior leader in the terrorist group.

There were no reports of injuries or damage in Israel, but the military said a lieutenant-colonel, identified only as "M", had been killed in the raid and another officer wounded.

Mr Netanyahu told reporters it was "the right step" at the moment and he was committed to restoring quiet along the Israel-Gaza frontier and preventing a humanitarian crisis in the coastal Palestinian territory.

Jewish Home party leader Naftali Bennett, a member of the security cabinet, said Israel was united in mourning the death of the officer, and praying for the speedy recovery of the other. The payment was part of $90 million that Qatar has pledged to deliver to cover the salaries of thousands of employees in the Gaza Strip in the next six months.

Chairman of the Yesh Atid party Yair Lapid also offered his condolences, and in a statement praised IDF soldiers "who with with bravery and determination reminded Hamas and our other enemies that there is no place where will not find them". Hardline Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said he had opposed "transferring the money to Hamas".
