Mattis: Putin tried to meddle in the midterm elections

The Russian President Vladimir Putin

Such an opinion during the California Security Forum was expressed by US Secretary of Defense James Mattis, Reuters reports.

"He is not recognizing that what he is doing is actually creating the animosity against his people", Mattis said.

Mattis also touched on the situation in the Kerch Strait with Russia's seizure of Ukrainian ships and sailors, which the US President Donald trump has canceled a meeting with Putin on the sidelines of the G20 summit.

American intelligence agencies concluded that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 USA presidential election to sow discord and boost Trump's chances through a campaign of propaganda and hacking aimed at disparaging his Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton.

Last week, US Ambassador Nikki Haley to the United Nations accused Russian Federation of "outlaw actions" and an "outrageous violation of sovereign Ukrainian territory" while addressing an emergency meeting of the Security Council.

Football leaks revealed that the Croatian playmaker will beat the 2016 UEFA European Champion to win the Balllon D'or award. Multiple leaked reports have claimed Modric is set to walk away with the award, and that may well be true.

Mattis did not elaborate on his claim that Russian Federation tried to interfere in last month's elections, adding only, "We are seeing a continued effort along those lines".

"But we do not accept predatory economic practices or coercion of smaller states", Mattis said.

Mattis also asserted that Russian Federation had interfered in the November midterm elections for Congress, though he gave no details nor provided any further evidence.

On Beijing, Mattis said the U.S.is seeking a "constructive reciprocal, results-oriented" relationship. He added more generally, "It's his efforts to try to subvert democratic processes that must be defended".

Now more than ever, it's time to send "a clear message" to Putin, Panetta said Saturday. The White House on Saturday said Trump, however, did have an "informal" conversation with the Russian president.
