Ohio State coach Urban Meyer to retire after Rose Bowl

You can now bet on whether Urban Meyer becomes the next Browns head coach

He stepped into that gig, won another national championship and went 82-9 over seven seasons before announcing on Tuesday he would retire at 54 after coaching the Buckeyes in the Rose Bowl on January 1.

Meyer's career at Florida ended abruptly as he first chose to retire following the 2009 season only to change his mind and announce he would remain with the Gators.

He then started his coaching career at New Hampshire in 2002 as the tight ends coach and eventually landed at Florida, where he was a grad assistant for Meyer.

"It was interesting because I've never had him as a head coach, so my first thought was, 'I wonder how this will work out?' but I definitely think he can do it", Murphy said when Day was named interim earlier this year.

A startling blowout loss at unranked Purdue on October 20 pushed Ohio State to the fringe of the national championship chase and prompted questions about Meyer's future. Meyer recorded his second flawless 12-0 season.

Later in the press conference, Cleveland.com's Doug Lesmerises asked Meyer if he's certain he will not coach again. He later moved on to coach at Florida, and won his first national championship with the Gators in 2006. He took a hiatus from coaching, but he wasn't done. That was thanks in large part to Haskins, who completed 70.2% of his passes (348 of 496) on the year, throwing for 4,580 yards, 47 touchdowns and just eight interceptions-in just his first season of appreciable playing time. It is a game Ohio State has won 14 of the last 15 times.

While Meyer brought a lot of success to the team, he was also at the center of controversy. He also was reproached for what some saw as overly lax treatment of Zach Smith, the assistant coach who was accused by his ex-wife of domestic abuse.

The Buckeyes finished the season 12-1, but Meyer was not on the sideline for three games because he was serving a suspension stemming from his handling of domestic violence allegations against one of his former assistants.

Ohio State followed that with five straight wins, including a rout of archrival MI that gave the Buckeyes another division title and then pulled away for an easy win over Northwestern in the Big Ten Championship.

His contract was extended in April by two years through 2022, increasing Meyer's salary to $7.6 million in 2018 with annual 6 percent raises.

This marks the third time Meyer has left his job since 2009.

After a year out of coaching, the Ohio State job opened - another dream job for the Ohio native who grew up a Buckeyes fan. He reportedly resides in OH with his wife in a massive 12,000-square-foot mansion.

One of Ohio State's biggest commitments in the 2019 class is ESPN 300 wide receiver Garrett Wilson, the 13th-ranked prospect overall out of Texas, who said that Day's openness and coaching style were things that drew him to the Buckeyes.

Meyer, 54, has been battling the effects of an arachnoid cyst on his brain, which was diagnosed in 1998 but has worsened in recent years. It's suspected that this is a major reason for his retirement.
