A report released by the World Health Organization on Wednesday details the public health benefits that could come with tackling the issue.

"The impacts of climate change are increasingly hard to ignore", said the statement, a copy of which was obtained by AFP.

"We are in trouble, we are in deep trouble with climate change".

G20 leaders on Saturday agreed a final communique after their summit in Buenos Aires, declaring that the Paris Agreement was "irreversible".

Even solid progress in Katowice on the Paris goals may not be enough to prevent runaway global warming, as a series of major climate reports have outlined. But unfortunately, since Paris, the implementation of those commitments for the majority of the countries has been less ambitious than the commitments themselves.

And the dust is still settling from US President Donald Trump's decision to ditch the Paris accord. And at the same time, what was promised in Paris is not enough.

However, the COP24 gathering is already facing hurdles with a clash of opinions.

Host Poland proposed a declaration for a "just transition" away from coal mining, the supplier of its main source of energy, which calls for winning social acceptance for the necessary changes.

Nations more immediately threatened by climate change, including Fiji, are urging for nations to act now.
