UN Climate Change Summit kick off in Poland with boost from G20

Sir David Attenborough Lays Into World Leaders At UN Climate Change Summit

Famed British naturalist Sir David Attenborough echoed his warnings, telling the gathering that the "collapse of our civilisations and the extinction of much of the natural world is on the horizons" if no urgent action is taking against global warming.

Adapting implementation guidelines of a climate change accord to combat global warming is the crucial objective at the 24th Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Poland from December 2 to 14.

Hosting the talks in the heart of its coal region of Silesia, Poland tried to set the tone for the two-week meeting by promoting the idea of a "just transition" for miners and other workers facing layoffs as countries adopt alternative energy sources.

Monday will see leaders from at-risk nations such as Fiji, Nigeria and Nepal plead their case at the COP24 climate talks, which aim to flesh out the promises agreed in the 2015 Paris climate accord.

"It requires everyone in society - individuals, businesses and governments - to play their part in changing behaviours, and I'm pleased that the Scottish Government is able to support the Marrakech Partnership for Global Climate Action in its work".

The report offers the latest accounting of national mitigation efforts and the ambitions countries have presented in their Nationally Determined Contributions, which form the foundation of the Paris Agreement.

"It is now more critical than ever that all countries commit to doing their fair share of cutting emissions and providing the tools and resources required to address climate change".

Climate change is already affecting communities around the world, and a slew of scientific and policy warnings have come out in the months leading up to this meeting.

The UN chief asked decision makers to focus on four key things: stepping up climate action, according to a solid plan, with more funding, as a smart investment in future of the planet. The United States is the only country, not part of the accord after President Donald Trump chose to walk away from it.

"Now in Poland, they have to agree on how they will achieve this collectively, we can not fail in Katowice", the United Nations chief said.

Tens of thousands of people marched peacefully on Sunday in Brussels urging governments to respect commitments on countering climate change as a United Nations conference on keeping global warming in check opened in Poland. Scientists say the deal's most ambitious goal - limiting the rise to 1.5 degrees C (2.7 C) - is still feasible, but increasingly challenging.

A string of major climate reports have cast doubt over the entire process, suggesting the Paris goals fall well short of what is needed.

"Katowice (Poland) may show us if there will be any domino effect", from the USA withdrawal, Laurence Tubiana, CEO of the European Climate Foundation and an architect of the Paris agreement, said in the AFP report.

It said about $50 billion would be earmarked for climate adaptation, a recognition that some adverse effects of global warming could not be avoided anymore but required a change in practice.

The Paris climate agreement sets a goal of raising US$100 billion (S$137 billion) every year from 2020 for climate action.

"At the forefront of the fight against climate change in Africa, the African Development Bank, strongly represented in previous COP summits is, once again, present in Katowice to ensure that the voice of Africa is heard loud and clear in global climate negotiations", the bank said on its website.

"This is the challenge on which this generation's leaders will be judged", he said.

The U.S.is also taking part, despite announcing previous year that it's pulling out of the Paris accord.
