Ex-Fox News anchor to be new USA ambassador to the UN

President Donald Trump plans to nominate State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert as the next USA ambassador to the United Nations, a senior administration official said Thursday. If Nauert is confirmed by the Senate, she would be a leading administration voice on Trump's foreign policy.

The decision could be announced as early as Friday, the source said, requesting anonymity. Trump had a fractious relationship with Nauert's first boss, the former secretary of state Rex Tillerson, but continued to hold a favorable view of the state department's top spokeswoman.

She has been the front runner for the United Nations post for some weeks and last month President Trump said she was under "under very serious consideration".

Ahead of the vote, the U.S. ambassador sent a letter to all UN missions to make clear that "the United States takes the outcome of this vote very seriously".

Nauert has been on the short list for ambassador to the United Nations since Haley announced that she was stepping down from her post in October.

Trump expected to pick State spokeswoman for UN ambassador

The post is considered one of the highest profile positions in US diplomacy. She became the spokeswoman to the State Department in 2017.

While Haley consistently maintained overt antagonism toward Russia in the United Nations, it's unlikely to get any better with Nauert, the speaker that brought us "Russia has long arms, Russia has lots of tentacles" in regard to the Skripal case, and once refused to answer a reporter's question because she was Russian saying: "Russian?" She was in charge of the Global Engagement Center that fights extremist messaging from the Islamic State group and others, and she has a seat on the U.S. Agency for Global Media that oversees government broadcast networks such as Voice of America.

Haley announced in October that she would be resigning as the ambassador to the United Nations.

Nuart was brought on to the administration after providing commentary on "Fox and Friends" on what appears to be Trump's favorite cable news network.
