France Abandons Fuel Tax Increase After Weeks of Protest

Yellow Vests’ Warn Macron of Greater Violence in Paris

The protestors, known as the gilets jaunes, or yellow vests, were reacting to a bunch of economic reforms President Emmanuel Macron has put in place - including a planned tax increase on gasoline.

"The demonstrations announced on Saturday 8 in Paris do not allow us to welcome visitors in safe conditions", Eiffel Tower's operator SETE said in a statement.

On Tuesday, his centrist government caved in and surrendered to the rioters, announcing a six-month suspension of the fuel tax increase - but not a scuttling of it - in response to the violent protests, which are now in their third week. Articles appear on euronews.com for a limited time.

Protesters say Mr Macron is out of touch, particularly with non-city dwellers who rely on their cars.

Demonstrators were back in the streets wearing their signature yellow vests despite the announcement.

Philippe said the state would do all it could to maintain order.

The French government hinted at more concessions to "yellow vest" protesters on Thursday in a bid to head off another wave of violence in Paris over living costs and regain the initiative after weeks of civil unrest.

Reversing course on next year's fuel-tax hikes have left a gaping 4 billion euro hole in the government's 2019 budget which it is now searching for ways to plug.

Authorities across France braced Thursday for the possibility of more riots and violence at anti-government protests this weekend, holding emergency meetings and deploying tens of thousands of police and security forces.

What has the prime minister said?

Scores of protesting teens clashed with police at a high school west of Paris on Thursday, according to French news reports, as part of nationwide student actions over university admissions procedures and rising administrative fees. A source in the Prime Minister's office said that "the government has not necessarily played all of its cards", with more concessions such as a further cut in residence taxes possible.

Tackling climate change could save millions of lives, report says
Nations more immediately threatened by climate change, including Fiji, are urging for nations to act now. And the dust is still settling from US President Donald Trump's decision to ditch the Paris accord.

Protesters wore yellow traffic vests that French drivers are required to carry in their vehicles.

The French government proposed to tax carbon, which would have added about 15 cents a gallon to the price of gasoline, or a little less than 3 percent, starting January 1.

He has refrained from speaking publicly about the protests and has largely remained in his palace.

The protest on Saturday 1 December descended into the worst rioting seen in decades, with hundreds of injuries and arrests. "If at the end of these discussions no good solutions have been found, we will accept the consequences" Mr Griveaux said.

"I am glad that my friend @EmmanuelMacron and the protesters in Paris have agreed with the conclusion I reached two years ago", Trump tweeted.

But since he came to power last May, globalists around the world said the French president's rise marked a political 'new dawn' against "division" and "hate", with many insisting his brand of "radical centrism" was a formula that should be imposed on their own nations.

"What is at stake is the safety of the French people and our institutions".

Philippe held crisis talks with representatives of major political parties on Monday, and met with Macron, who cancelled a two-day trip to Serbia.

She accused the government of "agri-bashing" by imposing new regulations such as requiring farmers to declare when they use glyphosate, a weed killer suspected by some scientists of causing cancer.

Sarkozy's government eventually cut out the most controversial parts of the bill, including changes to the special status of government workers, but maintained lifting the retirement age.
