Thousands of Northern Ireland O2 customers lose data services over technical issue

O2 mobile was down across the country for 24 hours

O2 customers across Wrexham have been affected by a service outage this morning - however signal and 4G services for some have returned to normal.

Engineers are working to fix the issue that has meant customers can not use their mobile data to access the internet and other services on its network.

02 has confirmed in a tweet that one of its third-party suppliers has identified a software issue in its system, which appears to be the cause of the fault.

Those on Sky, Tesco, Lyca Mobile and Giffgaff are also affected by the technical glitch. "We fully appreciate it's been a poor experience and we are really sorry".

However, when the network was down for seven hours in 2015, the company did not offer compensation to all customers, instead saying payouts would be assessed on a "case-by-case" basis.

The outage was first reported around 5:30am today on Twitter.

The company have so far not said anything about whether they would be giving customers compensation for the outage.

Ericsson has identified an issue in certain nodes in the core network resulting in network disturbances for a limited number of customers in multiple countries using two specific software versions of the SGSN-MME (Serving GPRS Support Node - Mobility Management Entity). In a statement Ericsson told ZDNet: "We are aware of the issue and are working together with our customers to solve it as soon as possible".

The mobile network said it had set up an urgent investigation after customers reported being able to get online or use mobile date from the early hours of Thursday. Work is now ongoing to fix the fault and customers are being encouraged to use wi-fi where possible.
