Computer virus freezes South Florida Sun Sentinel

Foreign cyberattack hits newspapers Here is what we know

The Southern California editions of the Wall Street Journal and The New York Times were affected as well, according to Light.

A suspected malware attack prevented distribution of the Saturday edition of the Los Angeles Times to many subscribers. The source identified the attacker only as a "foreign entity". Tribune Publishing sold The Times and the San Diego Union-Tribune to Los Angeles biotech billionaire Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong in June, but the companies continue to share various systems, including software.

The Los Angeles Times said the problem was first detected on Friday.

Investigators at the Federal Bureau of Investigations were not immediately available for comment.

All papers within Tribune Publishing, experienced glitches with the production of papers.

Saturday editions of suburban Chicago newspapers the Lake County News-Sun and Post-Tribune will also be among those to be delivered on Sunday. Teams from both companies were making progress against the virus, but weren't able to fix it before the newspapers went to print.

"We apologise for any inconvenience and thank our readers and advertising partners for their patience as we investigate the situation".

Jeff Light, the editor and publisher of the San Diego Union-Tribune, said in statement the attack appeared to begin Thursday night and continued into Friday for their production.

Manning said it is likely that Sunday paper delivery will be affected as well.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel was unable to produce a print edition Saturday because of a computer virus that also affected dozens of newspapers owned by Tribune Publishing.

"A computer virus infected the business systems associated with the printing process".

Tribune Publishing spokeswoman Marisa Kollias said the virus hurt back-office systems used to publish and produce "newspapers across our properties".
