Jeff Bezos, wife announce divorce

Jeff Bezos and MacKinzie

The pair, who married in 1993, have four children together.

The Amazon boss confirmed the split on his Twitter account.

Amazon didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. "They are successful in their lives", Crew said, "so most likely they are going to be able to be successful co-parenting together".

"They have duties not to waste or devalue marital resources, and to keep the value of marital property as high as possible", she said.

Reports in the United States claimed shares in Amazon dropped shortly after the couple announced they were parting ways after a quarter of a decade. In late 2018, Amazon stock reached a $1 trillion market cap, only the second company to do so after Apple. Amazon did not immediately return requests for comment about the status of the Bezos ownership stake or what impact the divorce might have on the company.

Such a hit would see him lose the current crown of world's wealthiest person. While his wife did the cross-country driving, Bezos wrote a business plan on the way to Seattle - chosen for its abundance of tech talent.

An exclusive source told the Post "Patrick and Lauren have socialised with Jeff Bezos and his wife for a few years, because both (now former) couples have houses in Seattle".

Under Bezos, Amazon launched the Kindle e-reader and revolutionised the way books are distributed and read.

It also has become a leader in intelligent voice-activated speakers with its Echo products, which are emerging as command centres for internet-connected homes - and a gateway to buying more stuff from Amazon.
