Pompeo Visits Middle East to Increase Pressure on Iran

Turkey has always been signaling of a third operation in YPG-held territory in Syria which the country sees a national threat to itself.

After Bolton's stop in Israel, he was suddenly uninvited to meet with Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan - apparently a result of Bolton's demand that Turkey not attack pro-US Kurdish fighters in Syria.

Bolton has been seeking assurances that Turkey wouldn't attack Washington's Syrian Kurdish allies after American forces depart. He said that Turkey would never compromise on the issue of the YPG Kurdish militia, which the us has backed in the fight against the Islamic State in Syria.

It was Erdoğan who gave the first impressions over the talks between Bolton and Kalın in his weekly address to his Justice and Development Party (AKP) parliamentary group. A long-promised proposed Trump plan for a peace deal between Israelis and Palestinians has so far failed to materialise.

US President Donald Trump stated on 6 January 2019 that "we will not be finally pulled out until [the Islamic State] is gone", in an apparent moderation of his initial announcement, made on 19 December, pledging to fully withdraw US troops from Syria within 30 days.

"I want to emphasize this specifically: We are now again facing a situation that we had observed with the American administration in the past".

If the U.S. plans on making a withdrawal conditional on Turkish guarantees of safety for the YPG in Syria, one of two things will happen. But, he added, any operation into Syria would also target YPG positions.

Mr Bolton said on Sunday he would be seeking assurances from Ankara they would not attack the YPG as a condition to a United States withdrawal - which Mr Trump had failed to address during a December phone call with Mr Erdoğan - in a bid to salvage relations with the Kurds.

Why did Pompeo mention Iran?

As the issue of Iran's funding of terrorism-which has grown since it received millions of dollars in cash windfalls as a result of the now-defunct nuclear agreement-continues to plague USA leaders and Arab countries, Tehran is signaling that its investment in these terror groups such as Lebanese Hezbollah has provided them with the military capability to destroy the Jewish state. And so are the policies that produced so much needless suffering.

In a scathing response on Twitter, Iran's Foreign Minister Javad Zarif mockingly said Teran will "mimic" USA policy in the Middle East "when hell freezes over".

Trump walks out of border security meeting after Pelosi rejects wall pitch
Pete Hegseth said the ongoing border security battle highlights just how far to the left the Democratic Party has drifted. It's unclear if any of the networks will give Democrats "equal time" after Trump makes his address.

Ankara considers the Kurdish forces in Syria who have been trained by and are assisting U.S. troops in the fight against Islamic State militants to be linked to groups trying to create instability inside Turkey.

The reassurances followed a diplomatic storm caused by Trump's surprise announcement in December that appeared to signal a rapid withdrawal from Syria, where USA special forces play an important role in supporting local forces fighting IS.

He added that the USA was facing challenges as it attempted to end involvement with the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) militant group because it was too engaged. We're having conversations with them even as we speak about how we will effectuate this in a way that protects our forces.

Pompeo says that the age of self-inflicted American shame is over.

"This is a story made up by the media", said Pompeo, underscoring Washington's continuing commitment to preventing any resurgence by IS.

"He (Mr Erdogan) talked about terrorists being an existential threat, we acknowledged that there is a threat to Turkey from terrorists and we will be very supportive".

"We can not accept the message Bolton gave from Israel, we can not be deceived by it", Erdogan said on Tuesday, referencing the national security adviser's comments about seeking protections for the Kurds.

Meanwhile, Russia, which has backed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the seven-year war, may seek to exploit the confusion created by the bickering between Turkey and the United States.

The United States withdrew its troops from Iraq in 2011 eight years after an invasion to topple Saddam Hussein, but sent thousands back after Islamic State fighters swept into the north of the country in 2014.

More recently, Trump and other administration officials have insisted they favour an orderly pullout.
