Michael Cohen to testify before House Oversight Committee

Michael Cohen President Trump's former lawyer departs United States Federal Court under heavy security after being sentenced to three years in prison in New York New York on Dec. 12 2018

They now hold the chairmanship of committees with the power to hold hearings, inviting or forcing witnesses to testify in public.

That means that he wants to talk.

Cohen, Trump's self-described longtime "fixer," pleaded guilty to the campaign finance charge in August and to making false statements in November.

Cohen's testimony also comes after he pleaded guilty to lying to Congress about his role in a Trump business proposal in Russian Federation considered during the campaign.

He did make a brief statement in court in which he said he "was weak for not having the strength to question and to refuse his demands".

And what stories he could tell.

Cohen, who had been the real estate billionaire's right-hand-man and fixer at the Trump Organisation in NY, said at his 12 December sentencing that he spent years covering up for his boss's "dirty deeds".

Federal prosecutors in the Southern District of NY have implicated, but not charged, the president in the deals reached in the closing weeks of the 2016 election, alleging in court filings that Cohen acted "in coordination with and at the direction of" Trump.

The company's roughly $18 billion in bonds also fell on Monday, with over 80 percent of the issues trading down. But they added that "exploitive tactics and a reticence toward change will not improve" the company's profile.

Following his sentencing hearing last month, Cohen's attorney Lanny Davis said he was prepared to "state publicly all he knows about Mr. Trump", including providing answers to "any appropriate Congressional committee interested in the search for truth and the difference between facts and lies". Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, who was made chairman of the committee after Democrats regained control of the House of Representatives, made the announcement Thursday.

He was sentenced last month to three years behind bars.

Riopelle told CBC News the hearing will be a full airing of the hush money payments handled by Cohen and other, potential revelations about Trump's businesses.

Cohen, who served as Trump's attorney and fixer for years, came under scrutiny from federal prosecutors in NY over hush money payments he orchestrated during the 2016 presidential campaign to silence Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal, two women who alleged having extramarital affairs with Trump.

Individual 1 was a reference to Trump.

"I want to make clear that we have no interest in inappropriately interfering with any ongoing criminal investigations, and to that end, we are in the process of consulting with Special Counsel Mueller's Office". This hearing will place the president's alleged crimes and extensive shady dealings - as well as the Russian Federation investigation - at the center of political life in Washington D.C. with potentially major repercussions for the country.

At the time of Cohen's sentencing, federal authorities announced a deal not to prosecute American Media Inc.

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, a California Democrat who had been seeking to bring Cohen before his committee, issued a statement on Thursday saying he hopes to schedule his own session with Cohen behind closed doors.
