Radio Signals From A Galaxy Light Years Away Have Been Reported

Scientists Find 13 Mysterious Deep Space Flashes Including 2nd Known'Repeater

A Canadian-led team of astronomers has observed unusual repeating radio waves coming from deep space for just the second time ever. But for only the second time, they have now found one that repeats itself, making it more likely that we might find out where they come from.

Canada's CHIME telescope has detected 13 new fast radio bursts, or FRBs, including a mysterious "repeater" signal of six bursts from the single source, a galaxy located 1.5 billion light-years from Earth.

Some, including Prof Avi Loeb, from the Harvard-Smithsonian centre for astrophysics, have posited theories that they could even be evidence of incredibly advanced alien technology, the Guardian reported.

"An FRB emitted from a merger of two neutron stars, or a neutron star and a black hole, for example, can not repeat".

The repeating FRB was one of a total of 13 bursts detected over a period of just three weeks during the summer of 2018, while CHIME was in its pre-commissioning phase and running at only a fraction of its full capacity.

Perimeter Institute Repeating fast radio bursts from distant space, or FRBs, have been detected by Canada's CHIME Telescope, pictured.

"When the first repeater was found, we didn't know if that was a unique object in the universe or if there was a class of these things, or if maybe all of the fast radio bursts actually were repeated, but numerous bursts were too faint for our telescopes to pick up".

"Until now, there was only one known repeating FRB", said a Chime astrophysicist, Dr Ingrid Stairs, from the University of British Columbia.

Google Assistant Now Lets You Check Into Flights with Your Voice
Unfortunately, the American tech giant has not yet discussed plans to add the feature to the Google Assistant on smartphones . Additionally, the Google Assistant is getting a new feature for the Philips Hue bulb that is aimed at helping you wake up.

Although there are still many questions about what exactly they are and what causes them, scientists believe they could be emanating from a powerful astrophysical phenomena billions of light years away.

Stairs said that with CHIME, "mapping the entire northern hemisphere every day, we're bound to find more repeaters over time".

Astronomers have spotted a second repeating fast radio burst, and it looks a lot like the first.

Scientists have scores of theories about what might create such stupendous signals - spinning cores of collapsed stars, powerful magnetic fields around black holes, the fog of dust and gas from which new stars form.

9 in the online edition of the journal Nature. "We have tantalizing clues, but it's hard to make definitive conclusions,"astronomer Shriharsh Tendulkar of McGill University in Montreal, a member of the CHIME team, told Science News". Most FRBs found are at frequencies near 1400 megahertz (MHz). CHIME can only record signals between 400 MHz and 800 MHz.

When faced with an enigma like this, the standard scientific mantra applies: we need more data. Experts speculate one of these could be the source of FRBs.

The telescope processes radio signals recorded by thousands of atennas with a large signal processing system and is the largest of any on earth. This remarkable observation could help scientists to better understand this phenomenon and where these bursts originate in the universe.

"It just seems completely inconceivable that there could be that many different alien civilisations all deciding to produce the same kind of signal in the same way - that just seems highly improbable".
