GoFundMe border wall campaign to refund donors after falling short of goal

The GoFundMe campaign for Trump's border wall is refunding donors

"Heartened by the overwhelming support of fellow Americans who have donated over $20 million to the viral GoFundMe campaign "We the People Will Fund the Wall, ' war hero and triple-amputee veteran Brian Kolfage announced the launch of a 501 (c) 4 called 'We Build the Wall, Inc.' which will fund the private construction of a wall along the United States" Southern Border".

He also said on the page that "100 percent" of the monies raised would be refunded if the $1 billion goal hadn't been met or if it hadn't "come significantly close".

On Friday, Brian Kolfage, who created the fundraiser, updated the campaign's GoFundMe page, urging donors to redirect their donations to a new 501 (c)(4) non-profit Florida Corporation named We Build the Wall, Inc.

"The federal government won't be able to accept our donations anytime soon", he wrote. "If for ANY reason we don't reach our goal we will refund your donation", Bobby Whithorne, a spokesman for GoFundMe, said in a statement Friday.

"We are better equipped than our own government to use the donated funds to build an actual wall on the southern border", he said.

That nonprofit wasn't part of the original description of his GoFundMe campaign.

Girl, 17, crashes vehicle while driving blindfolded for Bird Box challenge
The #BirdBoxChallenge started trending when several people started posting their videos of the challenge online. Layton police in Utah responded to a crash Monday because a driver covered her eyes while driving.

As of Friday, the campaign raised just over $20 million, but it's not all that Kolfage hoped for.

President Trump is still demanding that Congress fund his wall and partially shut the government down on December 22, leaving hundreds of thousands of federal workers without pay. "This means all donors will receive a refund", Whithorne told CBS of the GoFundMe. "Our team strongly believes that we can complete our segments of the wall for less than half of the government's estimated costs on a per mile basis". I am honoring that commitment today. As NBC first reported, he was kicked off the social media network for posting misinformation, hoaxes and inflammatory language in order to drive traffic to affiliate websites.

In the update, Kolfage said the group "is highly confident" that it can complete "significant segments of the wall in less time, and for far less money, than the federal government, while meeting or exceeding all required regulatory, engineering, and environmental specifications". Kolfage told The Washington Post on Saturday that he realized the Democratic-controlled House was unlikely to pass a bill approving construction of the wall, hindering his plans to give the money directly to the Trump administration.

It's not clear how this private effort would interact with any federal plans sought by Trump to build a wall with government funds in numerous same areas.

Whithorne said people will receive their money on April 11, unless they choose to donate their contribution to the campaign creator's new fund.
