Video shows bus driver rescuing baby wandering alone near road

"She did a lot more than her job".

MCTS says the lost boy, who was less than a year old, was wearing just a diaper and onesie when driver Irena Ivic spotted him December 22 along her route in Milwaukee. He's wearing a red onesie and a diaper.

The video later shows Ivic stopping her bus, running across the street, picking up the crying child and carrying her to the bus.

"I'm just grateful I was in the right place at the right time", Ivic said at a commendation ceremony held in her honor on Thursday. "I don't take that kind of compassion for granted".

While Ivic waited for authorities to respond to the missing child, he fell asleep in her arms. A passenger on Ivic's bus gave up her coat to keep the infant warm while they waited for firefighters, police and transit security officers to arrive, WISN-TV reports.

"Oh my God, I was so upset", said Ivic. Police said the boy's mother, who may have been suffering from mental health issues, left the boy outside, and that the baby was placed with his father after the rescue, according to WITI.

"[The] baby was so scared, and cried", Ivic, a mother of two, explained during the MCTS award ceremony yesterday, published in full by ABC-affiliated news outlet WISN.

"If it's a sad thing that its the ninth time than an MCTS driver has had to help a lost child get back to their family it is an extraordinary thing that we have drivers like Irena who are there to do it without hesitation", Abele added.
