Police seek staff DNA over vegetative woman's baby

In a news conference on Wednesday, Phoenix police spokesman Sgt Tommy Thompson said it was not known whether anyone had declined to give a DNA sample.

The patient, who has been identified as a 29-year-old Native American, has been under the care of the facility since she was between ages 2-3, according to the documents, which also state that the woman suffers from quadriplegia, recurrent pneumonia and a seizure disorder.

Thompson says police were called December 29 about a newborn in distress at a Hacienda HealthCare facility.

He said both mother and baby were recovering at a nearby hospital.

An attorney representing the woman's family told KPNX in a statement Tuesday that the family was not emotionally prepared to make a statement but that they "would like me to convey that the baby boy has been born into a loving family and will be well cared for".

Hacienda CEO Bill Timmons on Monday after 28 years at the facility, which was rated "much below average" on the Medicare website and almost had its government funding revoked after a 2013 investigation found at least one staff member was making inappropriate sexual comments to patients and staff were deficient in reporting patient abuse complaints.

The woman, a confirmed member of the San Carlos Apache Tribe, has lived in a vegetative state since she was 15 and almost drowned.

A lawyer for the woman's family said in a statement that her family was outraged at the "neglect of their daughter" and asked for privacy.

"One of our patients just had a baby, and we had no idea she was pregnant", the nurse said.

Thompson told PEOPLE, "It's my impression that the staff there had no clue that this lady was having a baby", adding that she was "quite a ways along" before she had a natural birth.

"Hacienda stands committed to doing everything in our power to bring this police investigation to a quick conclusion", the company statement said.

The state's online complaint database for care facilities shows multiple complaints about the Hacienda center going back to 2013.
